Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary/Polly Jane Arthur was born about 1863 in Kent, England – the daughter of James Hobday, a labourer, and Margaret Ann Fuller.

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in 1874 on the William Davie and they settled in Southland.

Mary married William Arthur, a compositor, on 27 May 1880 in Invercargill and they had six children.

William was declared bankrupt in 1887 and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Forth St, Dunedin.

In 1906 the two-storied house the family were renting was burnt to the ground, 'not a stick nor a stitch was saved.'

William died in 1925 and Mary died on 22 July 1942, they are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
