Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Joss was born about 1833 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

She married Richard Clark Artis, a ship’s captain and widower with a daughter, on 9 May 1863 in Old Machar, Aberdeenshire.

They had two daughters before Richard died in 1869 on the Silistria at Chincha Islands.

Mary worked as a grocer in Old Machar before she emigrated to Otago with her daughters in 1873 on the Edwin Fox.

They settled in Invercargill and when Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Tay Street.

Mary died on 25 June 1914 in Wellington and is buried in the family grave in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
