Mary Frances Woolford was born in North Otago in 1865 – the daughter of Thomas Woolford and Margaret Cane.

She married Albert Bartley in 1884 and they had 13 children, one who died in infancy.

When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Enfield.

Four of Mary’s sons served in the First World War – two died in action.

In the 1910s they moved to Oamaru where Albert died in 1933 and Mary died on 23 August 1940.

They are buried together in the Old Oamaru Cemetery.
