Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Bella Smith was born about 1848 in Renfrewshire, Scotland – the daughter of Captain Neil Smith, a mariner, and Rebecca Black.

She came to New Zealand with her family in 1861 on the Pladda and they settled in Dunedin.

Mary did not marry and when she signed the suffrage petition she was living with her widowed father in Clyde Street.

She died on 7 June 1923 and is buried with her parents in the Northern Cemetery.
