Mary Alice Bobsien was born in 1871 in New Zealand – the daughter of John Bobsien, a miner, and Alicia McCarthy.

She grew up in Waitahuna Gully in Otago where she signed the suffrage petition.

Mary married James Joseph Lucas, a plumber, at St Joseph’s Cathedral, Dunedin on 6 September 1905 and they had three children.

Mary died on 6 January 1930 and James died in 1948, they are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
