Mary Cameron McCalman was born on 19 December 1870 in Kilmonivaig, Invernesshire, Scotland – the daughter of Donald McCalman, a salmon fisher, and Isabella Calder. (See 137 I McCalman)
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Nelson.
They settled at Tahatika in the Owaka Valley where they had a farm and where Mary signed the suffrage petition.
She married James Morrison Thomson, a farmer, on 7 November 1901 at Chalmers Church, Dunedin.
They had two children and lived in Owaka where James died in 1943 and Mary died on 10 August 1948, they are buried in the Owaka Cemetery.
