Mary Callaghan was born about 1856.

She married farmer James Carson on 13 November 1876 in the North Otago Parish.

They had, at least, six children, one who died in infancy and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Enfield in North Otago.

James died at their home 'Ivy Cottage', Enfield in 1919 – he is buried in the Old Oamaru Cemetery. 

Mary died at Orokonui Home near Dunedin on 5 September 1939 – she is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery in Dunedin.
