Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Marion Jane Scott/Mary Mackey was born about 1843 in Hobart, Tasmania.

She came to New Zealand and she married John Cook, a miner, in 1872.

They had nine children, one who died in infancy, and when Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living at Livingstone in North Otago.

John died in 1896 when he was buried by a fall of earth while sluicing his claim.

Mary remained in Livingstone for several years before she moved to Timaru where she died on 28 June 1928, they are buried together in the Livingstone Cemetery.
