Mary Ann Atkinson was born in about 1840. She married James Coupar, an aerated water and cordial manufacturer, at Knox Church, Dunedin on 1 October 1864.

They lived in Waikouaiti, later shifting to Dunedin in about 1890. They had nine children, including Margaretta (Ettie) who also signed the petition.

Mary Ann died on 28 July 1921 and James died in 1926. They are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
