Mary Elizabeth Saul was born in Norfolk, England in 1844 – the daughter of Tom Saul, a coach driver, and Isabella Howard.
She married 45 year old Robert Cubitt in 1867 and they emigrated to New Zealand soon after.
They settled in Dunedin and had eight children.
Robert started work as a draper but, by 1878, he was a hawker facing bankruptcy with liabilities of £226 and assets of £45.
Robert died in 1883, he is buried in the Southern Cemetery.
When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in King St, Roslyn – now Erin St.
Mary died at her daughter’s house in Kaikorai, Dunedin on 15 September 1917, she is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
