Mary Elizabeth Nettlingham was born in Bromley, UK, in 1867. She travelled to New Zealand aboard the Wave Queen, with her parents Alfred and Barbara Nettlingham, and her sister Annie Nettlingham. They arrived in Auckland on 5 October 1882. She married Andrew Kelly in 1894, and their only son, Alfred Stuart Kelly, was born in 1897. Mary died at the young age of 31 on 26 October 1898. She is buried with her husband, and his second wife, Emma Kelly, at the Waikumete Cemetery in Auckland.
