Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Ellen Wood was born in 1856 in Stockport, Cheshire, England – the daughter of George Wood, a joiner and builder, and Ann Henshaw.

Her mother died in 1859 and later that year her father married Ann Bradbury

The family emigrated to Otago about 1880 and they lived in Royal Terrace, Dunedin.

Mary married Peter Christie, a draper, in 1911. They had no children.

Mary died at her home at Steep St, Dunedin on 19 February 1933. She left bequests in her will to The Methodist Women’s Missionary Auxiliary in Dunedin and The Methodist Orphanage at Papanui.

Mary is buried in the Southern Cemetery with Peter’s parents. Peter died in 1944, he was cremated.
