Mary Elizabeth Edgar [nee Bigelow] was born in Nova Scotia about 1859. She married James Edgar, who became a prominent figure in insurance circles, on 20 March 1885 at her parent’s home in Dunedin St Ponsonby. Mary and James produced 2 sons and one daughter. At the time of Mary’s death they were living in Dunedin New Zealand, at 286 York Place. Mary Edgar died at her home on 4 February 1917 at the age of 58, and was buried in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin on the 6th February. Her husband James Edgar died in December 1936 at the age of 80.

She is the sister of Emma Abbott and Annie Bigelow, who also signed the suffrage petition.
