Mary Gowan Thomson was born in New Zealand in 1866 — the daughter of Andrew Thomson, the owner of a ships chandlery and the builder of first freezing works in Otago, and Isabella Dalgliesh.
When Mary signed the suffrage petition she was living in Moray Place, Dunedin working in an office.
She did not marry and she died at her sister’s home in Port Chalmers on 1 December 1933.
She is buried in the Port Chalmers Old Cemetery.
