Mary Grant was born in 1866 in New Zealand – the daughter of Amelia Grant. (See 341 Amelia Tomlinson)

Mary married Richard John Goomes, a sailor and fisherman, in 1887.

When Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Bluff.

They had no children but they adopted a son who was born in 1909.

In 1935 Richard, who had 'been in ill-health for some time' died by suicide, inflicting wounds to his throat.

Mary died on 28 December 1945, they are buried together in the Bluff Cemetery.
