Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Mary Gray was born in Milton in 1869 – the daughter of James Gray, a storekeeper & draper, and Georgiana Harlow. (See 104 Georgiana Gray)
When Mary signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Milton working as a saleswoman.
She died on 6 September 1916 at her sister’s home in Dunedin, she is buried in the family grave in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
Her obituary said 'the unassuming and genial disposition of the deceased lady will be greatly missed by the public in her customary place of business, and perhaps even more keenly in Presbyterian Church circles, where for many years she had been a faithful member of the choir. Miss Gray had always been deeply interested in the activities of her church, and was an enthusiastic and hard working member of the Presbyterian Young Women’s Guild.'
