Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.
Mary Muir was born about 1856 in Lanarkshire, Scotland.
She married Hugh Gray, a miner, in 1874 and they had four children, one who appears to have died in infancy, before the family emigrated to Otago in 1883 on the “Nelson”.
They had a further six children in New Zealand and they lived in Lower Shotover and Green Island before settling in North East Valley where Mary signed the suffrage petition.
Mary died at her home on 23 December 1913 and Hugh died in 1935 - they are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
