Mary Scoble was born about 1836 in Cubert, Cornwall. She married John Gribben, a copper miner, in 1852 and they had eight children.

In 1875 the family emigrated to Otago on the Wellington and they settled at Georgetown in North Otago where Mary signed the suffrage petition.

John died at their daughter’s home in Dunedin in 1904 and Mary died on 29 September 1913 in Christchurch.

They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
