Mary/Mere Apes was born on May 7th 1842, the daughter of William Apes and Mata Punahere.

Mary married William Harper on May 21st 1863 at the Registrar’s Office in Waikouaiti. They had one son.
William worked as harbour master, then as a lighthouse keeper and fisherman.
When Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Waikouaiti.
William died in 1910 at Karitane, and their son died in 1918 during the influenza epidemic.
Mary died on May 30th 1924. She is buried with William in the Puketeraki Cemetery.
