Mary Wood Henderson was born on 21 September 1874 in Clackmannan, Scotland – the daughter of Robert John Wood Henderson and Catherine Menzies Millar.
Shortly after her birth she emigrated to Otago with her parents - they were to have 11 more children.
When she signed the suffrage petition Mary was living with her parents in St Anns Rd, Mornington, Dunedin.
She married William Stewart Smaill, a farmer, in 1906. They lived at first in Kaitangata then moved to Caversham in Dunedin where William worked as a contractor. They had three sons.
William died in 1947 and Mary died on 5 April 1959.
They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
