She emigrated to New Zealand about 1870 and she married Andrew William Humphrey, a storeman, on 1 January 1881 in Dunedin.

They had four children and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family was living in Eden Street.

Andrew died in 1915 and Mary died at her home on 23 December 1918 – she is buried with Andrew in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
