Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary O’Hare was born about 1848 in County Down, Ireland.

She is possibly the Mary who emigrated to Westland in 1876 on the Caroline.

Mary married John Dickson Hunter, a gold miner, in 1879.

By 1880, when John was declared insolvent, they were living in Gore in Southland – they do not appear to have had any children.

Mary signed the suffrage petition at Gordon, East Gore.

Around 1907 they moved to Christchurch where John died in 1909 and Mary died on 25 August 1917 – they are both buried in the Linwood Cemetery.
