Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Jane Graham was born on 2 October 1871 in Bathgate, Linlithgowshire, Scotland – the daughter of Robert Graham, a farm labourer, and Agnes McLeish.

She emigrated with her family to Otago in 1876 on the Oamaru.

Her mother died the following year and her father later married Jane Lambeth, also a passenger on the Oamaru. (See 70 Jane Graham)

When Mary signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Brunswick St, South Dunedin.

Shortly after this she moved to Victoria, Australia. Mary married John William Gumley in Victoria in 1895 and they had six children, one who died in infancy.

Mary died on 13 April 1933 and John died in 1951, they are buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery.

Robert Graham my Gt G/Father was not a farm labourer. Hs occupation in Scotland was Iron Stone Miner. in NZ he worked as a surveyer of roads for Dunedin Council. He had a dairy farm in Amity Street, later to become a sports oval I was told. His daughters ran the dairy farm. and his 2nd wife Jane nee Lambert was a tayltyoress rfrom Edinburgh, arrived Dunedin (same ship as the Gaham family, ) with a pair of 6 month old twins, alas, her husband who had gone ahead to NZ was supposed to be waiting her arrival in Dunedin,he was not to be found. Robert,s wife Agnes was rushed from the ship moored at quarantine island Port Chalmers to have her baby , unfortunately baby Roseanne died. Soon after ,Agnes Graham died, in Dunedin hospital ,Robert and Jane Lambert consoled and helped each other, eventually they married I am the grand daughter of the eldest daughter (Mary Jane ) of Robert and wife Agnes nee McLeish
