Mary Jane McKinnel was born in 1868 in New Zealand – the daughter of John McKinnel, a farmer, and Elizabeth Wilson. (See 145 Elizabeth McKinnel)
When Mary signed the suffrage petition she was living with her parents at 'Fern Hill' farm at Waikaia.
She married Robert Clement Gemmell on 7 November 1893 in the Waikaia parish and they had six children.
Robert died in 1923 and Mary died on 7 January 1937 in Gore, they are buried together in the Gore Cemetery.
