Biography contributed by Joyce Hislop

Mary Jane was born in Ireland around 1860 the daughter of John and Catherine (nee Russell) RICHARDSON. She married Thomas HISLOP a contractor, also from Ireland on 24 November 1881 in the Presbyterian First Church Dunedin. In the intentions to marry it states Mary Jane had been a resident of Dunedin for three years and Thomas four years.

Mary Jane and Thomas had one child Ellen (1883-1968). Mary Jane and Thomas lived at Maori Hill, Dunedin and in the 1896 electoral roll it shows Mary Jane’s occupation as a storekeeper in High Street and Thomas as a carter in Melville Street. They later moved to St Kilda.

Thomas died on 13 August 1922 aged 68 years. Mary Jane married again on 16 October 1925 to Edward FINCH. She died on 20 April 1931 aged 70 years and is buried with Thomas at the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
