Mary Jane Clarke was born about 1866 in Stewart Island – the daughter of Albert/Arapetere Clark and Mary Owen.
She married James Henry Wixon, a mariner, in 1887 and they had 13 children, four who died in infancy.
When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Bluff.
In 1909 they went to live in Gore where they ran a fish shop – they returned to Invercargill in the mid 1910s.
James died in 1928 and Mary died on 10 March 1952, they are buried in the family grave in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
