Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Mary Jane McCaul was born about 1857.
She married Robert Rainier Jones, a police constable, in 1881 and they had four children, one who died in infancy.
The family lived in Clyde, in Central Otago, before Robert was transferred in Queenstown in the late 1880s where Mary signed the suffrage petition.
In 1896 Robert was transferred to Dunedin – he retired shortly after and he ran a detective agency for a time in Dunedin.
The family later moved to Canterbury where, in 1903, Robert was charged with disobeying 'an order of the Court for the maintenance of his wife'.
Robert died in 1926 and Mary died on 15 August 1938, they are buried together in the Waimairi Cemetery, Christchurch.
