Mary Ann Smith was born about 1857 in Tasmania, Australia.
She married John Simpson Lind, a blacksmith, on 7 November 1876 in the Tapanui Parish.
They had 10 children, in 1888 their five year old son Willie died when his clothes caught fire while burning tussocks, he is buried in the Tapanui Cemetery.
When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were still living in Tapanui.
In the 1900s the family moved to Dunedin where Mary died on 31 March 1934.
John died in 1934, they are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
