Mary Julia Mant was born in 1867 in England – the daughter of George Mant and Emma Cooke. (See 114 Emma Mant)
She emigrated to Wellington with her family in 1875 on the Berar and they settled in Dunedin.
Mary married Oliver Gunn Lockhart, a clerk, in 1888 and they had six children, one who died in infancy.
When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in High St, in Newington, Maori Hill.
Oliver died in 1921 and Mary died on 20 April 1925 – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
