Mary Boyle was born about 1828 in County Galway, Ireland.

She married Thomas Madden and they emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1854 on the Sultana.

They later sailed for New Zealand in the early 1860s and their daughter was born in South Otago in 1873.

They farmed at Wairuna, near Clinton, where Mary signed the suffrage petition.

Mary died on 16 July 1894 and Thomas died the following year, they are buried together in the Clinton Cemetery.
