Mary McPherson was born about 1837 in Kilninian, Arygllshire, Scotland – the daughter of Duncan McPherson, a farmer, and Betsey McColl.
She emigrated to New Zealand and married Donald Matheson, a farmer, on 18 November 1872 in the Mt Ida Parish.
They had no children and when Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living at Tahatika near Owaka.
Donald died at Owaka in 1921 and Mary died on 29 August 1925, they are buried in the Owaka Cemetery.
