Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Raison was born about 1840, probably in England.

She emigrated to Wellington in 1864 on the Asterope and the following year she married Thomas McCluggage, a currier, on the 17th August in Wellington.

By 1869 they had moved to Dunedin and settled in Caversham. In 1870 Thomas served one month in gaol, with hard labour, for stealing a bottle of champagne.

They had 8 children and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Peter Street, Caversham.
Thomas died in 1917 and Mary died at her daughter’s home in Rutherford St, Caversham on October 14th 1921 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
