Biography contributed by Miyuki Hosoya-Neale

Mary Ann Cass McLaughlin, daughter of Jane and Archibald, was born on 12 Mar 1865 in Napier District, New Zealand. Her siblings Jane Elizabeth (b.1870) and William John (b.1866) were also born in New Zealand.

In 1896 and 1897 Mary lived in Prospect Street, Ponsonby, Auckland with her sister Jane (See 9 Jennie McLaughlin). While Jane worked as a tailoress, Mary did domestic duties.

Mary married John Henry Dixon Kerr (b.1874), a bank clerk in 1903 in Wellington. They might have met in Napier, as according to the Electoral Roll of 1900, Mary’s father Archibald, a retired civil servant, and John Henry Dixon Kerr both lived in Shakespeare Street in Napier.

Mary and John emigrated to South Africa soon after their marriage. Mary died on 7 October 1916 due to nephritis in Cape Town, South Africa at the age of 51. A probate record shows that Mary had a daughter Gwendoline Frances Jean Kerr (b. c. 1905). Mary’s grave is in Maitland Cemetery, Cape Town, South Africa.
