Mary was born about 1838 in Fife, Scotland and was married to John Ogilive McLeod, a master mariner.

They a one daughter born about 1876 in Dundee, Scotland and when Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Broad Bay on the Otago Peninsula.

Mary died at their home on 24 February 1918 and John died in 1926, they are buried with their daughter in the Broad Bay Cemetery.
