Mary Whelan was born about 1868 in New Zealand – the daughter of Michael Whelan, a miner, and Honora March.
She married Hugh O’Neill, a farmer, in 1893 and when she signed the suffrage petition they were living in Palmerston.
They had 3 children and lived their whole married life in the Palmerston district.
Hugh died in 1940 and Mary died on November 29th 1951. They are both buried in the Palmerston Cemetery.
