Mary McBride was born about 1856 in Ireland, she emigrated to New Zealand and, in 1871 she married James McDonald O’Kane, a carter and coal merchant.

They had at least four children and, when Mary signed the suffrage petition, the family were living in Fox St, South Dunedin.

James died at his home in Melbourne St, South Dunedin in 1929 and Mary died on 6 September 1936.

They are buried with their son in the Andersons Bay Cemetery under the name of Kane.
