Mary Paterson Scott was born about 1847 in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, the daughter of Walter Scott, a cattle dealer, and Janet Thomson. Her mother died in the 1860s.

Mary emigrated to New Zealand with her family about 1875. She did not marry.

Mary and her family were living at Broad Bay when she signed the petition. Her sisters Jessie and Ellen also signed the petition. 

Mary died on 1 December 1929 at Broad Bay on the Otago Peninsula. She is buried in the Portobello Cemetery with her father and sister.
