Mary Ann Prain was born 9 December 1866 in East Taieri, New Zealand. Her mother was Mary Henry Prain who died in in Seacliff Lunatic Asylum in 1896 after suffering from dementia and heart disease. Her father was Alexander Prain. She had two brothers David and Alexander. She married Thomas Gray Tily in 1901. He was a compositor – someone who sets the type or text for printing. They lived in Otago. There is no mention of any children. Mary died 17 April 1929 and was buried in Hampden cemetery in Otago.
