Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Mary Ann Joyce was born about 1853 in Co Kerry, Ireland – she may have been the Mary A Joyce who emigrated to Canterbury in 1873 on the Star of India.
She married William Quin, an auctioneer and journalist, on 21 May 1877 at Trinity Church, Lawrence.
They had, at least, five children and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Tapanui, South Otago.
William died in 1926 and Mary died at her son’s home in Tapanui on 16 August 1948 in her 95th year.
