Mary Woodhead was born in about 1836 in Worksop, a large town in Nottinghamshire, England. She was the eldest daughter of George and Harriett, one of five children. She immigrated to Canterbury with her family, arriving in early January 1859 at the age of 19. She married Charles Rippingale. Mary died in 1896, aged 59.
