Mary Ann Sarah Graham, my great grandmother, was born 16 December 1845 in London, England. She was the daughter of Thomas Graham and Mary Ann Brown.

Mary arrived in Lyttelton on her 5th birthday, 16 December 1850 on the 'Sir George Seymour' with her parents and three siblings - Joseph, Foundy and Henry Charles.

In 1868 she married a Swedish mariner, Olof Sundvall who later was naturalised and changed his name to Charles Smith.
There were two children of the marriage, Charles Joseph Smith and Lucy Ann Smith.

Mary's husband, Charles died at sea on the way from Lyttelton to Havelock in the Marlborough Sounds. He was the captain of the schooner 'Wild Wave'. The boat foundered in a storm and no trace of the boat or the crew was found.

Mary apparently lived a quiet life and died at her home on Cunningham Terrace, Lyttelton on 4 March 1921, having been nursed by her daughter Lucy.

Both Mary's and Lucy's signatures appear together on the petition.
