Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary McTaggart was born about 1851 in Australia.

She came to New Zealand where she married, gold miner, Hugh Campbell Steel in 1871.

They had 13 children, one who died in infancy, and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Greymouth.

Hugh died in 1919 and Mary died at her home in Blaketown on 23 July 1926 – she is buried with Hugh in the Karoro Cemetery.

Her obituary said she 'was one of the best type of pioneers, and she had been no less than fifty-six years on the Coast'.
