Mary Kennedy was born about 1847 in Scotland.
She emigrated to New Zealand about 1860 and she married, barrister, Donald Muir Stuart on 25 February 1880 in Dunedin.
Donald was the son of Donald McNaughton Stuart, the first minister of Knox Church.
Mary and Donald had five children, the three youngest all died in infancy.
In 1889 Donald died and when Mary signed the suffrage petition she was living in St David Street.
For a few years she advertised “Vacancies for Students; bath, piano; reduced terms”.
In 1899 she moved from St David Street – she died at her home in Musselburgh, Dunedin on 23 August 1933 and she is buried with Donald in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
