Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Lindgren was born in London about 1839 – the daughter of Magnus Lindgren, a clerk, and Sarah Rayment.

She emigrated to Tasmania in 1859 with her younger sister on the Oriental and she married John Walsh, a master mariner, in Hobart on 22 February 1860.

They had a daughter the following year (See 30 Eliza Theresa Nelson) before they moved to Lyttleton where they had, at least, a further seven children.

When Mary signed the suffrage petition she was living in Lyttleton.

John died in 1911, he is buried in the Lyttleton Cemetery.

Mary later went to live with her daughter in Hampden in North Otago.

She died there on 7 September 1917 and is buried in the Hampden Cemetery.
