Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Taylor was born about 1853 in Perthshire, England – the daughter of John Taylor, a brewer, and Elizabeth.

Mary came to New Zealand and she married William Orr Watt, a farmer, on 28 December 1876 at Springlands, Wairuna in the Inch Clutha Parish.

They had nine children and lived in Kaitangata where William was declared insolvent in 1891 and where Mary signed the suffrage petition.

In later life they moved to Balclutha where William died in 1919 and Mary died on 11 March 1932.

They are buried together in the Balclutha Old Cemetery.
