Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Malcolm was born about 1858 – she married Charles Michael Whelan, a postmaster, on 3 October 1877 in the Alexandra/Clyde parish in Central Otago.

They had seven children and lived in Tapanui, where Mary signed the suffrage petition, until the early 1900s.

They then lived in Gore and Blenheim before moving to Wellington when Charles retired.

He died there in 1923 and Mary died on 19 October 1954, aged 96.

They are buried together in the Karori Cemetery, Wellington.
