Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Mary Ann Millett was born about 1858 in Ireland.

She came to New Zealand where she married William Smaldon Wood, a miner, in 1883 in Naseby in Central Otago.

They had eight children and when Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in “Spring House”, High St, Dunedin.

William was working as a labourer and Mary’s occupation was “Lady”.

William died in 1912 and Mary died on 9 July 1926 – they are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
