Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Mary Beath was born on 26 July 1842 in Leith, Midlothian, Scotland – the daughter of Andrew Beath, a blacksmith, and Janet Nevin.

She married John Yates, a draper and widower with two children, on 23 May 1860 and they had one daughter before they sailed for New Zealand.

They settled in Dunedin & had a further seven children.

John was declared bankrupt in 1864 and again in 1884.

When Mary signed the suffrage petiton the family were living in George St, Dunedin.

John died in February 1907 and Mary died at her home later that year on 14 June – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
