Mary Hay was born about 1840 in Ireland.
She married labourer Robert John Young on 3 May 1869 in Greenock, Scotland.
They had four children, who all died in infancy, before they emigrated to Otago in 1873 on the “City of Dunedin”.
They had a further five children in New Zealand and when Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Taieri Rd, Halfway Bush, Dunedin.
Robert died in 1908 in Invercargill – he is buried in the Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill.
Mary died on 5 October 1921 at her home in Dunedin – she is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
