Matilda Sophia Beggars Baker was born in 1867 on the Central Otago goldfields – the daughter of John Baker, a blacksmith, and Agnes McAdam.
She grew up in Queenstown and she married Henry Green, a labourer, in 1891.
They had two children and also lived in Queenstown where Matilda signed the suffrage petition.
Henry died in 1895 and is buried in the Queenstown Cemetery.
Later in life Matilda moved to Invercargill where she died on 15 April 1938, she is buried in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
